Hebrews 10 - Clinton Rowand (1226) - December 21, 2016

Hebrews 10

  • Hebrews 10

Introduction

  • Hebrews 10 is a continuation of the rest of the book. It is a continuation of the ideas that Christ is superior to all of the Old Law.
  • Hebrews 10:1–10
  • We have talked at length before about the realities of an animal sacrificial religion. It would not have smelled good or been pleasant.
  • The new sacrifice of the lamb is a much better practical religion.

Hebrews 10:11–18

  • Hebrews 10:11–18
  • What is better about this system?
    • It is much easier.
    • It is finished, it was done once.
    • It actually forgave sins as opposed to animal sacrifices.
      • Remember when we spoke a few weeks ago about the principle of Christ’s blood rolling back to forgive those under the Old Law.
      • If Christ hadn’t died on the cross, they would have been just as lost as we are.
    • The guilt is not there in the same sense. The reality of offering a sacrifice does not hang over our heads daily.

Our Assurance of Faith

  • We are getting into some passages of scripture that can be very deep and challenging.
  • Hebrews 10:19 and following
  • Since we have access to the holy throne through our perfect savior, we have no reason to doubt.
  • We can enter into the holy places with confidence. Why? Not because we deserve it, but because our perfect savior has put on his glories that allow us to enter. The confidence is in Christ, not in us.
  • When we find ourselves being judged by God, what will make the difference? The difference is where we stand with Jesus.
  • Our hope is secure. Remember from previously in the book, our hope is an anchor. That anchor is only as strong as what it is connected to or hooked on.
  • We often overuse hope in the world today. Unlike the “hope” we may have in our sports team, the hope we have in our savior will never fail.

Stir Up One Another

  • Hebrews 10:24–25
  • This passage is often misused. The focuse of these two verses is on 24. Verse 25 is just a further detail on how to do what verse 24 says.
  • If a Christian isn’t doing right, it is our job to spur one another to nudge them into doing right. It can be nudging someone out of apathy or sin of ommission.
  • When we come together, we are to encourage one another so that we all do a better job of having love and good works be our life.
  • We shouldn’t neglect meeting together because when we don’t meet together we won’t encourage and stir up our brethren.
  • Our job is to be together and to positively influence on another.
